Come inside my dears…..

Horror has been a big part of my life since a young age.

My first memory of seeing something totally gruesome ( and one which has stuck with me) is when i was around 8/9 years old. I was over my best friends house 2 doors away. It was maybe around 10pm and we weren’t going to bed yet. Instead we decided to sneak our way into the living room where my friends family ( all adults) were watching a movie. I glimpsed a scene of a young women who was home alone at night, she is spooked i think and runs out into her garden ( one of those over sized American homes with large front lawns e.t.c.) she is bleeding through a stab wound. She can’t scream she is in so much pain and her pursuer continues to stab her repeatedly in a bloody mess, while her parents arrive home completely oblivious to what is happening metres away………..

I think it was that complete helplessness i remember feeling( at this point of my childhood and the next 8 years that followed, me and my sisters were enveloped in a domestically violent marriage, thankfully this is now over, but i can’t help but think that this also triggered my morbid interest as well as my mental health issues which are very internal) It was brutal for someone my age to witness….I was scarred perhaps. But during the years that followed and especially in my college years i met a group of people who became close friends and who also loved thrillers/zombies/horrors ( we even made a mini zombie movie, which unfortunately isn’t available on YouTube anymore ). Most weekends we would get our parents to rent, YES RENT an actual dvd from a  DVD RENTAL store, almost always with an 18 rating. Those were some of the best times i had as a teenager growing up. Back then 18 ratings were very mild when comparing it to todays content.  Today things are becoming more acceptable to film and we are becoming more desensitized (me too).

Watching horrors and pretending we were the characters, was a regular occurrence. Fuelled by our adolescence minds which were on overdrive.

We would take adventures out in woods and the local moorland, in dark and day light. We even performed a play ( we were drama/performing art students at the time) called ” Scary Play”, where we performed as young children going on an adventure with creepy haunted houses and clowns! We didn’t have smartphones and social media. We actually used our imaginations and played outside…….. This was only 10 years ago…

In those 10 years gaming, tv ,movies and their writers have become more gritty, dark, realistic, sadistic, original but above all so intense in their content that it’s no wonder i still get an adrenaline thrill when playing or watching.
